Team Work



This weeks focused on collaborating  to come up with the final plans to helps our students become successful. 
There are different ways to participate in students’ success, whether it’s for you or for someone else; Most times the person has to work hard for success and sometimes the person might not work as hard as the next person; also what one person considers successful might not be the same for another person; sometimes success is based on the person’s mind frame, the person’s background or upbringing and the expectations that the person set for him/her self.
   The quote also caught my attention because as an educator my most happiness comes from helping my students become successful.

Being Creative



This week I learn the arts of being creative as a teacher; to go above and beyond to make sure that your students are successful.
“For an assessment to accurately reflect what students know and can do, those students must be giving their best effort”.
The above quote caught my attention because sometimes assessments are given in general however; some students might not receive the same amount of resources that other students received. In some classes some students might gain more practice than those in another class, and sometimes it also depends on the techniques that their instructors use in class. Certain techniques are more effective than others and they might also be more memorable to the students; with that being said, students definitely need the best and maximum effort for their assessments to be accurate.

Different ways of reaching out to students


The main lesson learned this week is, knowing how to reach out to students with different needs in terms of education; using technology to reach out to students who has different ways of retaining information. This week also focused on being creative as a teacher and thinking of ways to reach out to your students.
“The challenge posed by greater diversity and greater accountability is to enable students with widely divergent needs, skills, and interests to attain the same high standards.”
The above quote is basically explaining that no child should be left behind or treated different due to their special needs, color, ethnic background, family background/upbringing, looks or whatever that makes the child unique/different from majority of the normal students. Every child deserves the same educational opportunity as others regardless of what school they are placed in. Educators are faced with challenges of caterings to people with different skills and different needs and at the end of the day the students are expected to educationally be at the same level.

Adding and Subtracting Place Values
State Standards:
Texas Math Standards 4.1: The student uses place value to represent whole numbers and decimals. The student is expected to:
   A. use place value to read, write, compare, and order whole numbers through the millions place; and (Place Value , Number Comparison , Order Numbers , Order Large Numbers )
   B. use place value to read, write, compare, and order decimals involving tenths and hundredths, including money, using concrete models. (Decimal Place Value , Order Decimals , Compare Decimals )

Goals

Unit Goals:

To increase students’ awareness of place value; lining up numbers on their place value when adding & subtracting decimals & whole numbers.

Lesson Goals:
Students will understand the rules of place values and be able to add and subtracting numbers involving ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands.

Methods

Anticipatory Set:

Keeping every student involved by randomly selecting someone to answer questions, demonstrating value placements with token and pennies, testing students, observing them solve problems and teaching them how to correct the questions that were not answered correctly.

 

 

Introduce and Model New Knowledge:

Students will be introduced to a new method of understanding place value by using tokens to model units, tens, hundreds and thousands; also by using fake money for adding and subtracting whole numbers and decimals.

 

 

Provide Guided Practice:

Place values will be demonstrated with different colors of tokens, fake pennies (for decimals). After demonstrations students will be observed while they identify how many ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands are in each stack of tokens and will be given numbers to subtract and add. Students will be shown how to correct their work if they got something wrong.

 

 

Provide Independent Practice:

Students will be given note cards with numbers, addition and subtraction questions, tokens and pennies; they will be asked to stack the tokens to fit the numbers on the cards and will need to follow directions on the cards.

 

 

Assessment

Formative/Ongoing Assessment:

Students will be asked to play place value games on the computer which gives them a score of how many questions they answered right or wrong. This game will be dealing with adding and subtracting decimals and whole numbers, it will also include number placements.


Summative/End Of Lesson Assessment:
Students will be given 5 questions to answer dealing with number placements (units, tens, hundreds, thousands) and subtraction & additions of whole numbers & decimals.

Note Cards, Computer games, Tokens and Pennies.
